Chapter 7
It took her only five minutes to pack. She drove back to the airport, returned the car, and headed straight for the terminal. After going through security, she found a bench. There was still half an hour before her flight started to board. She tried Michel Kingâs number for the third time, but there was still no answer. She was about to hang up when she heard a voice.
âWho is this?â
âMr. King?â
âI donât talk with strangers.â
âMr. King, Iâm Grace Sanders. Yesterday I was with Mrs. Mayda Peyton, or Mayda Larson as you may know her.â
âI havenât seen Mayda in a long time. I donât think I can help you.â
âJust over nine years ago there was an account in Maydaâs name, but it was also in your name and...â
âThat money in Vegas... I swear Maydaâs the one who blew all the money in the city.â
âYes, but there was a bit of money left in Preston Bank that couldnât be used until both daughters had come of age, which has just occurred.â
There was a long silence until King answered, âThat money...â
âYes, that money. You have to sign for Maydaâs daughters to be able to receive it.â
âWhy didnât she call me herself?â
âIâm her lawyer,â Grace answered. She didnât like lying, but she knew it was the only way to get information out of a man like that. What surprised her most was that what she had invented out of thin air seemed to actually strike a chord.
âOk. So what do you want from me? Iâm not in Colorado anymore.â
âYes, I know.â
âThis goes back a long way, but if Mayda needs me to sign something, send me the papers.â
âWhy did you and Mrs. Larson have an account together?â
âWe were business partners, but that was a long time ago.â
âBusiness partners?â
âYeah, we bought a little casino in Vegas, but things didnât go well. The creditors took everything but what was for the girls.â
âThanks for everything; Iâll send you the forms.â
Grace hung up, pensive. Mayda was not the spendthrift she seemed; nor had she left her girls penniless. She had gone to Las Vegas looking for a new future.
The stewardess called for passengers to board, and Grace grabbed her carry-on and walked toward the gate door. She passed through the jet bridge to the plane. As she got settled in her seat, she was glad the plane was bigger than the one she had arrived on. She closed her eyes and tried to think about dinner. Her parents would be arriving the next day, and she had a lot to get done.
On the one hand, she cringed at the thought of dining with them; on the other, she was thrilled to see them again. After all, they were her parents. Family was a mixed bag: sometimes they were like nails down a chalkboard; other times the very same people were a safe haven in a storm. These thoughts led her back to Mayda and her family. Each woman had a very different perspective on their peculiar family, but now Grace was unsure if any of them had been completely sincere.
